I just finished the book Love and Other Four Letter Words by Carolyn Mackler. Since the beginning of the book I've noticed that Sammie has changed a lot. I've also noticed something constant throughout the book. The thing I've noticed is the way Sammie deals with things, and the things she relates her problems to.
I noticed that Sammie relates her problems in life to music. Music is really a huge part of not only Sammie's life, but Sammie herself. She uses a lot of music references all throughout the book, at least 1 per chapter. For example, when Sammie is feeling kind of depressed about the fact that her and her mom moved it says " I was crouched next to the stereo, blasting "Both Sides Now"..." and also "I rewound the CD a few bars, What amazing imagery! I understand exactly what she's referring to, like she's talking directly to me". Even though the singer isn't really talking to Sammie, Sammie can relate so deeply with music, that she often feels like this. She often "escapes" her crazy confusing life with music.
Also something else is that she almost always refers to music that a 16 year old wouldn't know about, She mostly likes old songs, and rarely refers to the kind of things you would think a teen would like.
Sammie uses music a lot to just get through life sometimes. It's almost like the songs speak to her, and they pick her up and make her more able to deal with situations. In a way I could relate to her, because like her I sometimes just listen to music when I want to ignore doing other things.
Good post! I thought it would be very interesting if songs seemed to speak to you. Wouldn't it be interesting if a song played to match every situation you had, as though music narrates your life? I think it would be interesting but also slightly annoying. I like how you gave examples in your post, again good job!
