I just started the book Love and other 4 letter words by Carolyn Mackler, and I've noticed some things about the main character. Mostly about her personality, and how she always compares herself to others.
I've noticed that Sammie (main character) seems to have extremely low self esteem. She also always thinks that she isn't "good enough" for certain things. For example, when she was babysitting her mom's friend's daughter, she said " I wish I was Kitty, she would know exactly how to have girl talk and get all the secrets from Becca." So far, the person she compares herself to the most would be her best friend Kitty. According to Sammie, Kitty is smart, gorgeous, skinny, perfect, outgoing, basically everything Sammie thinks she isn't. Sammie is always saying things like "Kitty would know exactly what to do right now". This was probably the most noticeable sign that Sammie has extremely low self esteem.
I've also noticed some things about Sammie's personality. She seems to be quiet, shy, and in a way "different". I would say she's different because unlike Kitty, she isn't interested in going to parties and doing bad things, she'd rather watch a movie or stay inside. I would say she's shy because when she was in the park, and met a girl named Phoebe, she hardly talked, she mostly listened, and eventually tried to end the conversation.
So far in the book, I've mostly been noticing Sammie's personality, and kind of how she deals with certain problems she faces. I'm now starting to wonder is Sammie will change at all throughout the book.
Kimberlee)- Great post! I read this book too and I totally agree with you that Sammie has low self esteem. Don't you think that Kitty is a bad influence and a bad friend to Sammie?
ReplyDeleteSpiffy post indeed! I've never read this book, and agree with you based on what you've said on Sammie's esteem. I think Kitty does not souind like a real friend. Someone you compare yourself to constantly is someone who makes you feel inferior, so I think Kitty is a mean old hag. I predict that Sammie will either ditch her, or you will find out that she had a really bad past or something (keep in mind that I have never read the book.)Similarly, though you barely mentioned her, I think that Phoebe and Sammie will end up being friends by the end. By the way, what type of "bad things" do you mean? There are a lot. WONDERIFIC POST!!!
