Little House on the Prairie

I read the book Little House on the Prairie by Laura Ingalls Wilder. Even though it's usually the book that a 4th grader would read, it actually contains some complex ideas. The book takes place in the 1870's, which is very different from today. The kids from then and now lived very differently that young kids now.

Laura and her sister Mary have different chores than children today have. For example: in the book it says"... and after Mary and Laura helped Ma cook the cornbread and rabbit stew, they went down to help her wash the clothes." This shows that they have many adult responsibilities, even though they are still young children. This is what's expected of children at that time. They weren't really allowed to just sit around while things had to be done.

Another example would be when Laura and Mary had to watch Caroline (their baby sister) while their parents had to go to see what was happening outside of their home. Their parents have alot of trust in them, or else they would never let them do these important jobs.

Laura and Mary lived very differently than children of today did. They didn't have all the luxuries that children today have (such as Ipads, computers, and phones) they had to use their imaginations to keep themselves busy, or help their parents. Most kids today do not have to do that because they have material things to keep them occupied. It's clear that less responsibility is placed on kids today rather than in Laura's time.

  1. Great post Kimberlee! i loved how you compared kids from back then to kids now and how they may be more responsible then us, which i think in most cases is true. :)

  2. I loved the post kim! I totally agree with Rosie on that one.. I liked how you compared the kids from the 1800's to the kids nowadays, how their responsibilites were much more dificult. I also liked how you gave an example of each hard chore that both Laura and Mary did, and how it differs from what kids do nowadays :)
