Over the summer I read a book called Inkheart. It is told in third person omniscient. The book is about Meggie and her dad Mortimer ( often called Mo) as they try to: find a book called Inkheart, escape Capricorn's fortress, and save Meggie's mom Theresa. The hero of this book I think is Meggie. She is also the protagonist. The shapeshifter would be Dustfinger. Dustfinger has resented Mo because Mo accidentally read Dustfinger out of Inkheart and into the real world, away from his family and friends. Then, Dustfinger joins forces with Capricorn, who promises to read him back. Dustfinger then realizes Capricorn is lying, and then tries to help Mo and Meggie escape.
The shadow of this book is Capricorn. Mo also read him out of Inkheart, and he made himself a village filled with his henchman. Throughout the book, he tries to capture Mo and use his power of reading things out of books for his own personal gain. The mentor of this book would be Mo. Because even though Meggie also has the power he has, he knows how dangerous it can be, and tries to shield her from that. Being a child, Meggie just thinks that the power is wonderful, so Mo tries to help her understand the consequences in a good way.
I think a good detail to describe Dustfinger would be desperate. In the Inkworld (home to all of Inkheart's characters) Dustfinger has 2 daughters and a wife, and a job he loves ( he's a performer in the marketplace). And once he arrived in the real world he was lost. He wasn't used to the way people acted, or looked, and he missed his daughters so much. Also, he couldn't tell his family anything before he left, so they had no idea why or where he went, and if he was coming back.
